MEDCO

Dollar Tree recommendation :
Short says the shopping experience at Dollar Tree is better than its competitors: more exciting discretionary merchandise, brighter lighting, visually appealing displays and favorable store locations.
The prospect of a continued recession is bad news for most retailers, but thrift should be sexy for Dollar Tree.
Research in Motion :
That's why we're lavishing affection on Research in Motion, the wireless device company that developed the BlackBerry. Even in the face of a recession, sales are expected to increase 32% this fiscal year while earnings are forecast to grow by 9%.
The company did lower its near-term profit forecast recently, which disappointed investors, but the company also boosted its subscriber growth target, a good sign for the long haul.
Nick Agostino, an analyst at Research Capital, named RIM his top pick for 2009.

With the economy in turmoil, many Americans are heading back to school to improve their prospects in a dismal job market. That's boosting the fortunes of many for-profit education firms, such as DeVry.
Sales at DeVry rose 35% in its most recent quarter, thanks to enrollment gains and a revenue boost from U.S. Education Corp., a company DeVry acquired in September that focuses primarily on certification and associate degrees in health and technology.
Brandon Dobell, research analyst with William Blair & Company, said the U.S. Education purchase should help DeVry during the recession and for the long-term. That's because health care is one of the few sectors with a large imbalance between demand and supply of qualified workers.

(SWN) P/E: 21.1, EPS Gr: 48%
Energy stocks might make investors skittish now that oil prices have plunged from their record levels last summer, but Southwestern Energy Corp. is flourishing in a tough market.
A lack of capital forced other energy companies to cut back but Southwestern's production of natural gas and oil grew 70% last year -- the company expected only a 35% increase at the beginning of 2008.
The company is predicting a 48% increase in production in 2009, "something no peer could come close to matching," said Scott Hanold, analyst at RBC Capital Markets.
Southwestern is testing "downspacing" -- drilling wells closer together -- in order to increase oil inventory. The big story, though, is Southwestern's discovery of the Fayetteville Shale in Arkansas. Shale gas is an unconventional natural gas produced from sedimentary rock.
The Fayetteville site is a huge boon for Southwestern. There's so much drilling to be done, in fact, that the company could have above-average growth in production and earnings over the next several years, Hanold said.
Of course, the stock's performance could be volatile during the coming months, especially if the economy and natural gas prices don't improve any time soon. Shares are down 36% since hitting a 52-week high last July.
